Family Home .03
At the break of dawn on September 27, Brian and his family packed only the essentials into their truck and drove to higher ground, fleeing the rising waters of Cattail Creek. They waited out the flood, which ultimately swept more than three feet of water into their historic home—originally built in 1896. Once the water receded, they relocated to nearby Burnsville, NC for safety. With his family secure, Brian threw himself into relief efforts, working tirelessly with a team to support recovery across Yancey County. When the dust began to settle, we met Brian and learned about his home restoration project. The flood had severely damaged the structure and destabilized the ground beneath it. Thanks to funds raised through GoFundMe, the family was able to hire a crew to lift and move the house 100 yards away from the creek to safer, higher ground. A new foundation has since been laid, and our teams are now hard at work helping to restore this beloved piece of local history. Watch the video produced by FreeFly Apparel for Brian’s story.
